Snehalaya – it’s a dream

come true!

A Better Way of Care

The Doctors Dream

Over the years, doctors at Gwalior Childrens Hospital, visiting health professionals and even volunteers expressed concern at the quality of care they saw at many of the conventionally run institutions  in the Gwalior region.

Dr. B.K. Sharma, founder of the Gwalior Childrens Hospital organisation, resolved to take positive action. He devised a radically different concept. Instead of institutionalised 'care' in the conventional way -- poor, destitute and disabled children would be looked after in a 'Care Home' where their educational, health and personal development needs would be met. Wherever possible they would live as family together in separate units with adult residents including homeless women and the aged as their parent heads. The Snehalaya organisation would provide the care including educational, nursing and medical facilities to those in need (or those who cannot care for themselves).

Land was donated by Dr Sharma in memory of Dr. Meena Sharma.  Located near Sikroda, work was started at the end of 2004 and the concept became reality in 2006.

And so "Snehalaya" (in Hindi it means "Home -- with Love") came into being.

A Happy Family Home in Gwalior

A Childs Dream

Imagine it! A homeless child alone on the streets in the northern city of Gwalior --- one of the poorest regions in India.

In this area there's very limited government support for health, education or welfare services. Electricity, if available at all, is sporadic. The water supply is unreliable ... there's little or no sanitation. The best a destitute child can hope for is a bed in a local city orphanage with food and clothing thrown at them out if pity --but always they carry in their mind's eye a vision of family living.

For a fortunate few -- thanks to generous people like you -- this Dream has become reality. For a few handfuls among the thousands of destitute, disabled and disadvantaged children, "Home" is a loving place by the 16km milestone in Village Sikroda.
